History
A birch-lined avenue leads to Holmsgården, whose roots stretch back to 16th-century county bailiffs. The manor stands gracefully on a hill, surrounded by peaceful parkland and a rocky rise crowned with a picturesque windmill.
First mentioned in land records in 1723, the old manor at Holms is the parish’s only manor house. Its long history holds many memories — some bright, others more sombre. The earliest known master of Holms was Jöns Ragvaldsson, a juryman and county bailiff.
Over the centuries, many have owned Holms manor, but one name still echoes through time: Mamsell Ulla. She cooked for the large household, managed the storerooms and outbuildings, and every night made her rounds with a heavy ring of keys. If a lamp was still burning at midnight, she would tap on the window with her cane.
To this day, on moonlit winter nights, some say you can glimpse her shadow in the snowdrifts and hear the faint jingling of keys.
In 1908, Holmsgården became the welcoming home of Vörå Folkhögskola. Following extensive renovations, the grand manor offered a beautiful and secluded – yet remarkably fitting – setting for adult education.
Since 2001, Holmsgården has been owned by Folkhälsan. The building initially served as office space for staff, but stood vacant from 2012 until renovations began in spring 2020.
